2013 Sports Medicine Conference

The Canine Athlete

This program will provide valuable information for veterinarians, veterinary technicians, owners, handlers, and trainers.

December 6th, Friday 6:30-9:00pm 

Friday's Program will concentrate on:
  • Agility
  • Field trial dogs, and
  • Search and recovery dogs

Sessions will provide an overview of the activity, dog selection,
relevant rules/regulations, training/conditioning for the event, competition/working tips, factors affecting performance, preparing for performance, lingo and jargon used in the sport/activity, and known injuries/conditions that result in withdrawing from competition/work or retirement.  Demonstrations of the activities, with a question and answer session.


Saturday's Program will include:

  • Nutrition for performance
  • Common condition limiting performance
  • Evaluating dogs for potential problems
  • Warming up, stretching, cooling down

After lab sessions will include warm-up and cool down, stretching, and ball use; patient evaluation for owners and trainers - quick palpation for swelling and pain; anatomy lab - surface palpation using live dogs, skeletal and muscle anatomy using skeletons and plastinated specimens.
